About

As a colorist, Stephan offers individual color determination of film productions of various kinds in the spirit of the authors' vision. With fundamental experience as a photo lab technician and director of photography he can assist and discuss the image process in advance by developing a lookup table based on test shots or dailies

Stephan studied filmmaking at the University of Fine Arts Hamburg and the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou. His graduation work »Transit Circle« premiered in 2019 at the 50th edition of Visions du Réel in Nyon, along with 62nd DOK Leipzig, 33rd FIPADOC Biarritz, 13th Beijing Queer Film Festival, 17th Dokumentarfilmwoche Hamburg and 1st 30_70 Doc Fest Vittorio Veneto, where it received the jury award.

After his studies, Stephan set up a color correction studio in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg, where he lives and works. Originally from Stuttgart and Budapest, his visual experience was shaped early on by his parents, the painters Szilvia Faragó and Wolfgang Knauss. Stephan loves to skate, play table tennis and basketball in the neighborhood.

  • »A film like a poem; a coming-of-age movie that escapes all the known clichés. Stephan Knauss proves that he is one of the filmmakers to watch closely in the next future. The way he handles and organizes all the elements of his extremely beguiling work are irrefutable proof for it. Transit Circle is a sensorial ambient film that displays flair and creativity.«

Giona A. Nazzaro (Artistic Director of the Locarno Film Festival)
